Job Summary

 The Staff Physiotherapist is a member of a professional health discipline whose education and knowledge qualify him/her to make decisions and accept responsibility for all aspects of Physiotherapy patient care, in accordance to Departmental and Hospital standards and conforming with the Provincial and Federal Legislative Acts which govern their duties.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Staff Physiotherapist is primarily responsible for the assessment, treatment, education and management of in-patient, outpatient and Home Care services as designated by the Physiotherapy Service Coordinator and as caseload warrants.

The Staff Physiotherapist is also involved in education of patients and/or appropriate family members; students, interns, other health care workers; and the general public, with regard to physiotherapy and the management of the patient’s health problems.

• Patient Care: 

1. Is primarily responsible for the assessment, treatment, education and management of in-patient, outpatient and Home Care services as designated by the Physiotherapy Service Coordinator and as caseload warrants.
2. Maintains adequate treatment and progress records in accordance with the departmental and hospital standards
3. Establishes and maintains liaison with medical staff and other health care professionals concerning patient care including attendance at appropriate multidisciplinary meetings
4. Keeps statistics in accordance with government and hospital requirements
5. Maintains strict confidentiality of all patient information
6. Assumes some duties of the Physiotherapy Service Coordinator in his/her absence
7. Ensures environment is free from hazards and equipment is in safe and good working order
8. Performs related duties as directed by the Physiotherapy Service Coordinator
9. Participates in program development, implementation and evaluation.

Working Conditions

The Staff Physiotherapist works in close liaison with the Physiotherapy Service Coordinator and possibly one or two other physiotherapists. He/She is also involved in the day-to-day supervision of the Physiotherapy Assistant/Aide. He/she also works in close liaison with the Respiratory Therapist, and interacts with Physicians, Nurses and other health care team members. The physiotherapist will work day shifts only. The staff physiotherapist may have to travel for work, to see home care patients and/or to work in another close-by hospital. The physical conditions vary from working in a sitting or standing position. They may be required to assist clients with transfers or ambulation.

 Knowledge, Skills, Experience required: 

• Educational:

The Staff Physiotherapist must:

1. be a graduate of an accredited Canadian program or, if educated outside Canada, have successfully completed the Canadian Physiotherapy Association registration process
2. be licensed to practice in Ontario, and registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario
3. be eligible for membership in the Canadian Physiotherapy Association
4. attends appropriate hospital medical rounds, meetings and in-services and participates in various committee work
5. participates and contributes in educational activities for other Physiotherapy staff, health care workers and the general public
6. attends as appropriate, seminars, courses and conferences in order to improve knowledge, skills and attitudes through continuing education
7. assists in the supervision and provision of clinical experience to Physiotherapy students and interns

• Personal:

The Staff Physiotherapist should have the ability to:

1. show sound professional judgment and initiative based on education and experience in the field of Physiotherapy
2. organize all types of patient care
3. work harmoniously and effectively with others
4. show respect for and a willingness to learn from the professional knowledge of other members of the health care team
5. appreciate the importance of, and be open to new concepts and trends in the academic and clinical field of health care knowledge

Salary: $40.88 to $56.66 per hour as per salary scale

Le physiothérapeute est un membre d’une profession de la santé dont la formation et les connaissances lui permettent de prendre des décisions et d’assumer la responsabilité de tous les aspects des soins physiothérapeutiques aux patients, conformément aux normes du service et de l’hôpital, ainsi qu’aux lois et règlements provinciaux et fédéraux régissant ses fonctions.

Fonctions et responsabilités

Le physiothérapeute est principalement responsable de l’évaluation, du traitement, de l’éducation et de la gestion des services de physiothérapie aux patients hospitalisés, aux patients externes et aux patients recevant des soins à domicile, selon les besoins de la charge de travail et les directives du coordonnateur ou de la coordonnatrice des services de physiothérapie.

Le physiothérapeute participe également à l’éducation des patients et/ou des membres appropriés de leur famille, des étudiants, des stagiaires, des autres professionnels de la santé et du grand public en ce qui concerne la physiothérapie et la prise en charge des problèmes de santé des patients.

1) Soins aux patients

a) Est principalement responsable de l’évaluation, du traitement, de l’éducation et de la gestion des services de physiothérapie aux patients hospitalisés, aux patients externes et aux patients recevant des soins à domicile, selon les besoins de la charge de travail et les directives du coordonnateur ou de la coordonnatrice des services de physiothérapie.

b) Tient des dossiers adéquats concernant les traitements et l’évolution des patients, conformément aux normes du service et de l’hôpital.

c) Établit et maintient une liaison avec le personnel médical et les autres professionnels de la santé concernant les soins aux patients, notamment en participant aux réunions multidisciplinaires appropriées.

d) Tient les statistiques conformément aux exigences gouvernementales et hospitalières.

e) Assure la stricte confidentialité de tous les renseignements concernant les patients.

f) Assume certaines des responsabilités du coordonnateur ou de la coordonnatrice des services de physiothérapie en son absence.

g) Veille à ce que l’environnement soit exempt de dangers et à ce que l’équipement soit sécuritaire et en bon état de fonctionnement.

h) Effectue les tâches connexes qui lui sont confiées par le coordonnateur ou la coordonnatrice des services de physiothérapie.

i) Participe à l’élaboration, à la mise en œuvre et à l’évaluation des programmes.

Conditions de travail

Le physiothérapeute travaille en étroite collaboration avec le coordonnateur ou la coordonnatrice des services de physiothérapie et possiblement avec un ou deux autres physiothérapeutes. Il participe également à la supervision quotidienne de l’assistant ou de l’aide en physiothérapie.

Il travaille en étroite collaboration avec le thérapeute respiratoire et interagit avec les médecins, les infirmières et les autres membres de l’équipe de soins de santé.

Le physiothérapeute travaille uniquement de jour. Il peut être appelé à se déplacer dans le cadre de son travail afin de fournir des soins à domicile et/ou de travailler dans un autre hôpital situé à proximité.

Les conditions physiques de travail varient et peuvent nécessiter de travailler en position assise ou debout. Le physiothérapeute peut être appelé à aider les patients lors de transferts ou de déplacements.

Connaissances, compétences et expérience requises

1) Formation

Le physiothérapeute doit :

a) Être diplômé d’un programme canadien accrédité ou, s’il a reçu sa formation à l’extérieur du Canada, avoir réussi le processus d’inscription de l’Association canadienne de physiothérapie.

b) Être autorisé à exercer la physiothérapie en Ontario et être inscrit auprès de l’Ordre des physiothérapeutes de l’Ontario.

c) Être admissible à devenir membre de l’Association canadienne de physiothérapie.

d) Participer aux tournées médicales, aux réunions et aux séances de formation internes appropriées de l’hôpital, ainsi qu’à divers travaux de comités.

e) Participer aux activités éducatives destinées aux autres membres du personnel de physiothérapie, aux professionnels de la santé et au grand public, et y contribuer.

f) Participer, selon les besoins, à des séminaires, des cours et des conférences afin d’améliorer ses connaissances, ses compétences et ses attitudes professionnelles grâce à la formation continue.

g) Participer à la supervision des étudiants et des stagiaires en physiothérapie et leur offrir des expériences cliniques.

2) Qualités personnelles

Le physiothérapeute doit être capable de :

a) Faire preuve de jugement professionnel et d’initiative fondés sur sa formation et son expérience dans le domaine de la physiothérapie.

b) Organiser tous les types de soins aux patients.

c) Travailler de façon harmonieuse et efficace avec les autres.

d) Faire preuve de respect envers les connaissances professionnelles des autres membres de l’équipe de soins de santé et être disposé à en tirer des apprentissages.

e) Reconnaître l’importance des nouveaux concepts et des nouvelles tendances dans les domaines académique et clinique des connaissances en soins de santé et être ouvert à ceux-ci.

Salaire: 40.88$ à 56.66$ par heure selon la grille salariale en vigueur
